StatementLock comes with built-in categories like Housing, Groceries, Dining, Travel, Subscriptions, Medical, and many more. But you can create your own to match how you think about your spending.
To add a custom category:
1. Go to the Insights tab
2. At the top, find the ➕ Custom Categories section
3. Type a name (e.g., "Kids Activities", "Boat", "Vacation Fund") and click Add
Your new category immediately appears in the category dropdown in the Rule Builder (🔧 New) and in Insights → Keyword Rules.
To remove a custom category: Click the × next to it in the Insights tab. This only removes the category from the list — transactions already assigned to it keep their category.
Tips:
• Create categories that are meaningful to your household — "Dog Expenses", "Home Renovation", "Mary's Business"
• Keep the list manageable — 5-15 custom categories is usually enough
• Custom categories appear in the AI Financial Report alongside built-in ones
